Calculating Retinal Contrast from Scene Content: A Program

John J. McCann and Vassilios Vonikakis

The most critical element in the accurate calculation of retinalContrast is the logarithmic conversionTable used to calibrate the mapInput file. The partnership of accurate meter measurements in the Table, and the digital paint-by-numbers map of the scene provides a means to generate the linear double precision GSF input sceneLuminance values.
Input Warning:
Do not use photographic images as imageMap files!
Photographs are not accurate HDR records of sceneLuminance.
-
The most critical step in analyzing retinalContrast is the study of image pixel’s numerical values.
Output Warning
Visual inspection of ImageLogDisplay, namely just looking at the a display of the calculated retinal image, uses vision twice: once in the calculation, and then again in the visual inspection. The numerical values of the retinalContrast are important, not their visual appearance.
